Author-director Mary Bronstein‘s newest characteristic takes audiences on a tense journey of motherhood that just about by no means lets up.
If I Had Legs I’d Kick You stars Rose Byrne as Linda, a mother searching for a remedy for her daughter’s mysterious sickness whereas coping with an absentee husband, a lacking remedy affected person and a large gap in her ceiling that retains getting larger.
The movie instantly builds rigidity with a closeup of Linda in a household remedy session along with her daughter (Delaney Quinn), who emphasizes that “Mommy is stretchy,” in contrast to Daddy, whose phrase is ultimate. Though Linda pushes again, the therapist calls BS, and the mother continues on a downward spiral of disgrace and guilt.
Setting the tone, the remainder of the film largely consists of closeups and strategically composed pictures to emphasise her deteriorating psychological state. As the opening within the ceiling will get larger, it represents the crushing weight of the world hovering over her.
And whereas Byrne has loads of closeups, the strain is barely compounded by the characters whose faces are by no means seen, together with her daughter, who’s in fixed panic mode, and her husband (Christian Slater), who is barely heard by way of the telephone whereas he chastises her parenting from afar.
Whereas the stress builds on the mother, staying along with her daughter in a motel and monitoring the kid’s medical machine at night time, she unwittingly takes half in a cycle of apathy that in the end impacts the faceless little one’s well-being to doubtlessly disastrous measures.
As a therapist, her classes with one affected person (Danielle Macdonald) mirror her classes along with her personal therapist — performed by Conan O’Brien in a shocking dramatic flip, with an applicable sprint of his well-known wit — as each ladies wrestle to really feel heard beneath the burden of motherhood and different stressors that include womanhood.
Though hardly the touchy-feely movie you’d go see on Mom’s Day, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You will make you wish to name your mother and examine in — like, genuinely examine on her.
Marking Bronstein’s long-gestating sophomore characteristic after 2008’s Yeast, the film is her first undertaking to obtain exterior backing after self-funding a number of indie initiatives. It was filmed in Montauk in the course of the Hollywood strikes with a SAG-AFTRA interim settlement.
Producers are Sara Murphy, Ryan Zacarias, Ronald Bronstein, Josh Safdie, Eli Bush and Richie Doyle.
